Roy Bells Boxing Tent
3 galleries
These Galleries are part of project following Michael Kariatiana and his Boxing Tent. From 2010, when after a 16 year absence the Troupe returned to Alice Springs Show, and toured further north to Tennent Creek and Darwin.
It is the Cage Fighting of old, with its own traditions and Lore. The scraps are controlled and Michael proves the art of Spruiking is alive and kicking if not alive and well.

54 imagesTent Boxing was banned in most parts of Australia in around 1970, although one or two troops continued in a much more regulated way, most called it quits in protest to the new regulations. In 2010, for reasons unknown to me as yet the Carnival returned to the Alice Springs Show. Boxers of all skills ages, and Genders were invited to the beat of a drum and clang of a bell to pit themselves against the travellenig "Pros". It was a sight to behold and an insight into times gone by.

218 imagesRoy Bells Touring Boxing Tent is a 3rd generational Boxing Troupe Show founded in 1924. Now run by Bells Grandson Michael Kariatiana, who has lived, fought and trvelled with the show his whole life. His Spruiking is a pleasure to watch and listen to and once inside the tent it is like travelling back through time.
