Budgie Mania- Enormous Budgerigar Flocks of Central Australia
27 images Created 25 Nov 2012
After 3 years of unusually high rainfall, Budgerigars have bred in great numbers throughout Central Australia.
Usually in small flocks, as the rivers and natural water sources dry up, they congregate in the early mornings at a couple of dams. It is a spectacular sight as the flock size builds over a period of about 1/2 an hour, then waxes and wanes for the next 2 hours as birds come and go. By 7.30am most birds are back out in small flocks eating the abundant grass seed.
Watching this Mega Swarm build and then become a single giant organism is an experience I'll never forget.
Last week we had 2 days rain. There is not a single Budgie at this location now.
I am in Transit to Africa and this Gallery will culled to exclude the editorial selections. Until then prints of all of the images in this Gallery will be available before I begin to sort them out. If the print types, sizes and prices don't suit, please get in touch to discuss further options- there is always a way.
